Love this book and the first book, The Book Whisperer. The author confirms what I know about helping children to fall in love with reading. She provides a rationale for independent reading and solid research about independent reading and the achievement of students. The descriptions in the book make you feel as if you are in a conversation with the author. I had the opportunity to hear the author speak and she is inspiring in the book and in person. I recommend this to teachers, reading specialists, librarians, principals, and Board Members, anyone who longs to create lifelong readers as opposed to test takers.
In a world where too many educational critics are pushing mandates and scripted curriculum, Donalyn Miller's approach to reading instruction is refreshing. FINALLY someone is saying it is okay to let middle school students read for enjoyment and continue to learn to love reading! As an educator and lover of books and reading, I can only thank Miller for writing an instructional text with real world examples and student data that proves it's effectiveness. Love this book and it's predecessor, the Book Whisperer.
This is now my go-to resource for designing a reading program that taps into the excitement and engagement of reading, full of practical strategies. Validates what those of us who advocate for reading with students already know and provides a roadmap for putting best practices into action.
Donalyn Miller is simply the best. If you teach literacy to kids of any age, this is a must read!
I'm writing this review years after my purchase. I still love this book and continue to read it before the start of each school year. I recommend it to all teachers as a quick and thought provoking read.
I first read the first book, The Book Whisperer, in nearly a single sitting and was very intrigued to read this one as well. Friends told me it was more of the implementation plan for Donalyn's theory and practice, so I think that is what I was expecting and may have had too high of expectations. It took too long for me to read this, which just meant I wasn't as captivated by it. Still an interesting read, but I felt it was more of a story sharing book than anything.
Best purchase I've ever made. I hated every professional book I was forced to buy in college, so I was convinced all professional books would be just as bad. Let me tell you, not only did this book change my perception of professional reading, it changed my perception of TEACHING reading. Everything Donalyn said resonated so deep for me. I'm so excited to implement her strategies next year in my fifth grade class. This is a must read for EVERY teacher
